Bachelor of Medical Science
BMedSc
This is the only course of its type in Australia available by distance
education study. The course is also tailored for sub-degree tertiary and TAFE
graduates to upgrade their qualifications to degree level. Credit for up to 16
subjects may be granted for previous study.
The course is a three-year broad-based course (with a common first year) offering a number of alternative programs in medical science:
Generic course:
Students can opt to choose groups of subjects from the range of medical science disciplines. This will be attractive to students seeking flexibility in an undergraduate medical science program and provides broad experience as options for entry into research programs and other postgraduate courses in this area.
Pathology specialisation:
This prepares graduates for employment in the pathology industry. This specialisation replaces the Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) course.
Pharmaceutical Science specialisation:
This prepares graduates for careers in the pharmaceutical industry.
Respiratory Science specialisation:
This qualifies graduates to enter into respiratory laboratories, asthma clinics and respiratory disease therapeutics.
Enrolment through
Wagga Wagga Campus
Study mode
On campus (also available to international students)
Distance education
Normal course duration
Full-time 3 years (6 sessions)
Part-time 6 years (12 sessions)
Admission criteria
Whilst there are no HSC subjects specified as a prerequisite for admission, school leavers who are intending applicants are advised to include 2 unit Mathematics and 2 unit Chemistry in their HSC studies or recognised equivalent.
Successful applicants who believe they do not have an appropriate high school chemistry background are strongly recommended to undertake the chemistry subject offered in the Universitys Studylink supplementary program prior to commencing study in the course. Inquiries concerning the chemistry subject offered through Studylink should be directed to Student Services on (02) 6933 2376.

Professional recognition
Graduates from the Pathology specialisation of this course are eligible for corporate membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists. In addition, this course is designed to provide a variety of levels of eligibility for membership of a range of professional bodies, such as AACB, ASC, ASBMB, ASMR, ASPA, ANZRS, ASM and HGSA.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 192 points (24 subjects).
On campus students who enrol in one of the three specialisations must complete a minimum of six-weeks clinical experience in an approved laboratory in order to be eligible to graduate. Distance education students who are not in appropriate employment will also be required to complete such professional experience. This is not a requirement of the students enrolled in the generic course.
