Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management)
MAppSc(Lib&InfoMgt)
Fees may apply
This graduate course recognises the need for a thorough understanding of the traditional bases of librarianship, while also emphasising a study of the new electronic means of collecting, organising and disseminating information. It is designed as a generalist course to prepare librarians and information specialists for work in all types of libraries and in information agencies such as community information services and information brokers.
The investigation of the properties and behaviour of information, the forces governing its flow and the techniques of processing it are an essential part of library and information studies. The course is concerned with the origin, organisation, storage, retrieval, interpretation, transmission and utilisation of information itself as well as the media by which that information is communicated.
The course aims to equip students with skills and attitudes that will enable them to function effectively as information specialists in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings, develop professional knowledge needed to make valid judgements as information specialists, and develop the interpersonal skills that will enable them to work effectively with others.
The final stage of the course, for the Masters award, aims to provide students with advanced knowledge, building on a first professional qualification, that will prepare them for more senior management or specialist roles in information agencies.
