MID447 The Professional Midwife (8)

In this subject, students will use research and evidence to explore what it means to be a professional midwife, becoming familiar with the professional, ethical and legal standards, policies, codes and guidelines that determine the scope of practice and expectations of the registered midwife. Quality improvement and safety frameworks will be investigated and critiqued as they apply to midwifery practice and the delivery of, and advocacy for, safe and competent care. Environmental sustainability and the implications for midwifery practice will be studied. Students will reflect on their future learning needs, identifying strategies that will assist them in maintaining currency as midwives who engage in the development and application of evidence based practices to their work as a professional midwife.

Assumed Knowledge

Undergraduate nursing knowledge of legal and ethical requirements for practice as well as knowledge of professional standards and codes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify, comply with, and apply Australian legislation, policies and guidelines, scope of practice and common law relevant to midwifery practice
  • be able to analyse and apply policies, directives, professional standards and codes of practice and, practice in accordance of these professional standards
  • be able to analyse and critique a range of ethical approaches including critiquing the professions' and the community's ethical values
  • be able to describe improvement methodologies including the principles of quality improvement and basic methods and tools for improving the quality of health care
  • be able to evaluate Australian safety frameworks and their implication for improving midwifery care.
  • be able to identify lifelong learning approaches to ensure practice is current
  • be able to critique and apply research findings to advance midwifery practice
  • be able to analyse and reflect in, on, and about their own midwifery practice and identify needs for professional development
  • be able to identify, develop, implement, appraise and advocate for the policies, protocols, and guidelines that support environmental sustainability in midwifery
